Lesson 11 · Production & IE
Line efficiency
5 min
In a real company
Production manager, IE, line supervisor
Efficiency shows how much of the paid time was converted into standard minutes of output. It is reported for every line every day and drives the factory's cost per minute.
Key ideas
- Produced minutes = output × SMV.
- Available minutes = operators × hours × 60.
- Efficiency = produced ÷ available × 100.
Formula
- Produced minutes
- = Output × SMV
- Available minutes
- = Operators × Hours × 60
- Efficiency %
- = Produced ÷ Available × 100
Worked example
A 40-operator line made 560 shirts (SMV 22) in an 8-hour day.
- 1Produced = 560 × 22 = 12,320 min
- 2Available = 40 × 8 × 60 = 19,200 min
- 3Efficiency = 12,320 ÷ 19,200 = 64.17%
✅ 64.17% line efficiency.
Try it live in the calculatorCommon mistakes
- Counting helpers differently every day.
- Using the wrong SMV (sample vs bulk).
- Ignoring overtime hours in available minutes.
Quick quiz
Answer 2 of 3 correctly to complete the lesson.

2. Available minutes for 30 operators × 9 hours?
3. If efficiency goes up, the real cost per minute…
