Quick answers
Textile formulas, answered.
The most-asked merchandising questions with the exact formula and a worked example. Open any app above to calculate with your own numbers.
What is fabric consumption and how is it calculated?
Fabric consumption is the fabric needed for one garment. Formula: marker length ÷ garments per marker, then × (1 + wastage%). Example: 9.6 m ÷ 6 = 1.6 m; with 3% wastage = 1.648 m per garment.
How is GSM calculated?
GSM = sample weight in grams ÷ sample area in square metres. With a 100 cm² GSM cutter, multiply the disc weight by 100. Example: a 1.85 g swatch of 10 × 10 cm = 185 GSM.
What is GLM and how do I convert GSM to GLM?
GLM is grams per linear (running) metre. GLM = GSM × fabric width in metres. Example: 180 GSM × 1.829 m (72 inch) = 329.2 g per metre.
How do you calculate garment costing and FOB price?
Add fabric (price × consumption × wastage), trims, processing, CMT, packaging and other charges per piece, add overhead and profit, then divide by (1 − commission%) because buying-house commission is a share of the FOB price.
How is CMT cost calculated?
CMT per piece = SMV × (operator cost per minute ÷ line efficiency), plus overhead and factory margin. Example: 22 SMV × ₹2.361 effective CPM = ₹51.94 labour per shirt.
What is marker efficiency?
Marker efficiency = total pattern area ÷ (marker length × marker width) × 100. Above 85% is excellent for tops; 80–85% is good.
How do I calculate SMV?
SMV = observed time × performance rating × (1 + allowance%). Example: 0.70 min × 90% × 1.15 = 0.7245 minutes.
How do I convert yarn count Ne to Tex?
Tex = 590.5 ÷ Ne. Nm = Ne × 1.6934. Denier = Tex × 9. Example: 30s Ne = 19.68 Tex = 50.8 Nm.
