Quick answer
How do I convert fabric price per kg to price per metre?
Multiply the price per kg by the weight of one metre in kg. Weight per metre = GSM × width in metres ÷ 1000.
GLM (g per metre) = GSM × Width (m)
How it works
Fabric Cost Calculator
Convert a per-kg fabric price into an accurate cost per metre and per yard, with dyeing, processing, finishing, wastage and supplier margin built in.
Mills quote by the kilogram but garments are costed by the metre. The calculator first works out how much one metre weighs (GLM = GSM × width), adds every per-kg cost, applies the supplier margin and wastage, and then converts the final per-kg price into per-metre and per-yard costs.
Formula
The formula, in full
- GLM (g per metre)
- GSM × Width (m)
- Cost per kg
- (Price + Processing + Dyeing + Finishing + Other) × (1 + Margin%)
- Wastage-adjusted / kg
- Cost per kg × (1 + Wastage%)
- Cost per metre
- Wastage-adjusted / kg × GLM ÷ 1000
- Cost per yard
- Cost per metre × 0.9144
Example
Cotton jersey at ₹220/kg
- 01Width 72 in = 1.829 m → GLM = 180 × 1.829 = 329.2 g/m
- 02Cost / kg = (220 + 15 + 45 + 12 + 5) × 1.08 = ₹320.76
- 03With 3% wastage = ₹330.38 / kg
- 04Cost / metre = 330.38 × 0.3292 = ₹108.76

Industry tip
Industry tip
“Ask mills to confirm whether the GSM quoted is before or after wash. A 5% GSM drop after finishing changes your cost per metre by the same 5%.”
Assumptions
What this calculator assumes
- Margin is applied on the sum of all per-kg costs.
- Wastage is applied after margin.
- GSM and width are finished values.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert fabric price per kg to price per metre?
Multiply the price per kg by the weight of one metre in kg. Weight per metre = GSM × width in metres ÷ 1000.
Why does wider fabric cost more per metre?
One running metre of wider fabric contains more square metres and therefore more grams, so at the same per-kg price it costs more per metre — but usually gives better marker efficiency.
Is dyeing cost charged per kg?
Most dye houses charge per kg of greige fabric. If yours charges per metre, convert it to per-kg first or add it to Other cost.
